Indie Game Spotlight: Evoland

evoland

evolandEvoland is a game that eloquently brings together the reminiscent features of classic role-playing and action adventure video games. Created by Nicolas Cannasse from Shiro Games, Evoland’s gameplay revolves around unlocking features to evolve the game from classic 8-bit graphics to enhanced 3D-style art and music. If you’re familiar with The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, and even Diablo; then you will enjoy the quirky style of Evoland and will recognize the fun references within the game.

You start off as a somewhat familiar looking 8-bit hero in a black and white, 8-bit world. You are able to unlock two chests on each side of the screen which are essentially introductions to the game play. When you open chests, you unlock various features of Evoland to further evolve the game. The features within the chests include enhancement to music, graphics, inventory, health bars, and more. Evolving your game in Evoland is a unique experience but the best part of the game is the story. If you are familiar with classic RPGs and action adventure games, then you will enjoy some of the fun Easter eggs that appear in Evoland. One of my favorites is the villain of Evoland, Zephyros. There are more special features in the game that will keep players entertained like the enemies that look familiar, characters with familiar sounding names, and the quirky jokes that appear after you open chests.

If you’re a huge fan of classic RPGs and action adventure video games, you will enjoy Evoland and will certainly enjoy discovering some of the Easter eggs that most gamers will appreciate. Evoland is a unique experience that also doubles up as a history lesson for new gamers as it presents the journey of video games and how they have developed throughout the years. The only thing I disliked about Evoland was that it was a very short game.
